When’s the best time to start a fat-loss plan?

Here’s New Body Plan editorial director Joe Warner on why the perfect time to start working towards a fitter, healthier and happier life is right now!

If I had a £1 for every time someone said to me that they’d love to lose a bit of weight and get into better shape, but there’s “no point” starting now, I’d be a very rich man. It’s always a variation of this common theme: that it makes more sense to them to wait until they have more time or more energy or more money or more motivation.

Now, I find that logic completely bonkers – and that’s what I’ve said to everyone who has bought into the “I’m waiting for the perfect time” nonsense. All it is is a tactic to delay taking that first step – and that’s a big mistake.

Why? Because you can make a huge difference to the way you look and feel very quickly – in fact, far quicker than you think is possible – but the positive changes to your body, and your life, can only happen once you’ve taken that first step!

It’s true and I’ve witnessed it first hand: it’s how New Body Plan founder Jon Lipsey went from clinically overweight to Men’s Fitness cover model. It took him just eight weeks, and the most important session was the very first one: once he’d got that in the bag, he was already on track!

The perfect problem
I believe everyone – and yes, I’m looking at you – can make massive changes to their physical and mental health, once they commit to a plan of action to achieve it.

But the reason why the majority of people never get the results they want – and indeed why many people tend to gain weight, rather than lose it – is that they’re waiting for the “perfect time” to start following a training programme and healthy-eating plan.

We humans are programmed to think in specific blocks of time. Days and weeks, months and years, birthdays and bank holidays, Christmas and New Year. Our lives are seemingly governed, planned and remembered around arbitrary days and dates. Here’s an example, and be honest: how many times have you said to yourself, or someone else, that “the diet starts Monday”? We’ve all done it, right?

Waiting for the “perfect time” to act – whether that’s starting a new exercise routine, learning a language or instrument, or applying for your dream job – is the single-biggest reason why so many of us never achieve those genuinely-attainable ambitions that would have a life-changing impact on our health, happiness and well-being.

Seize the day!
The truth is that the best time to start working towards your goal was yesterday, because you’d have already taken that first step, which is always the hardest. So that means the next best time is NOW! Today!

Don’t worry, your first move doesn’t have to be big or dramatic. It can be as simple and easy as promising yourself you going to make the time to do a home workout. Or maybe it’s to read this article on our four tried-and-tested ways to curb your sweet-tooth cravings.

You’ve got this!
Ultimately the sooner you start the easier it is, and the one thing I do know with 100% certainty is that if you keep waiting for the perfect time to start then you’re going to be waiting forever!
