How much would you pay for a leaner body?

Would you splash all your cash for the perfect body so you could eat what you want and never work out again? If so, you may be missing out on the genuine life-changing benefits of exercise, says New Body Plan editor Joe Warner

Last night I took part in an online quiz with some friends when one of them – after a question about cheese, believe it or not – mentioned how annoyed with himself he was at how much weight he’d gained during lockdown, and how he wished he could go to bed tonight then wake up tomorrow with “a lean and defined body”.

Someone else then asked how much he’d pay to have that perfect body instantly, and never have to exercise again and eat whatever he wanted. Within a minute some eye-watering figures were bouncing back and forth at what everyone thought was a reasonable cost.

I, like every time fitness or fat loss comes up in conversation with friends or family, kept my lips sealed. I only spoke up when one friend gave the perfect answer – and I think it was the first time I’ve ever been happy that someone else got a question right before me!

Fit for free
He said he wouldn’t pay anything. Not a penny. Why? Because, he said, “I can’t put a price on how good working out makes me feel”. Cash-back. He admitted he was late to the gym game, having not started exercising until his mid-thirties, and had only got into it as a “necessary evil” – his words – because his partner was increasingly worried about his ever-expanding middle and a family history of type-2 diabetes.

But once he had got into exercise he realised what he’d been missing out on. And when he started losing weight he enjoyed it all the more because he knew he 100% deserved it. It hadn’t happened by chance or luck, or cost him one of his three wishes, but because he’d made a promise to himself to turn his life around, discovered a type of training that left him buzzing, and worked his socks off in a way that made him feel confident, empowered and proud. He didn’t mind admitting to us all that he loved how I finally feel good in my own skin – for the first time in decades”.

Force for good
I’ll be honest, one of my mates didn’t get it, insisting he’d borrow up to their eyeballs to buy a cover model body. But I could see that for everyone else that then penny had finally dropped: they were starting to realise that “I don’t have to work out to lose weight”, but rather “I choose to work out to feel good”.

Suddenly their questions came thick and fast and I was only too happy to help. It made my day that I could answer them all, although admittedly it ruined the evening for the quizmaster.

The easy life
After the call ended one comment stuck in my mind. It was when my friends said that despite joining the gym as a means to an end – “I have to exercise to lose weight so one day I’ll be happy” – he now uses his workouts as the “anchor” for the rest of his day. By that he meant that he wants to train hard and challenge himself because “a good workout makes the rest of my day easier”. He said exercise made him a better husband, a better dad, a better son and a better colleague.

Of course, he didn’t mean that juggling his many commitments to work, his wife, his kids, his parents and everyone else who depends upon him was an effortless walk in the park, but working out gives him the energy, motivation, patience, and a bunch of other virtues he needs to make his everyday life that little bit easier so he’s always on top of things.

Plan for progress
It’s why I am such a big believer in everyone having a health and fitness goal, and then following a smart and sustainable plan that will get them there. Because it’s only when you have a challenging yet realistic goal as well as an easy-to-follow blueprint that you’ll get the results you want.

That’s the beauty of a good training programme; it takes all the guesswork and uncertainty out of your training so all you need to do is stick to the plan and give it everything you’ve got. That way you know you’re always moving closer to your long-term goal, but more importantly you feel better right now. It’s about as close to a win-win situation as you can find.
