Let’s face it, we all want to get leaner, and healthier, as quickly as possible, and the good news is that achieving that goal doesn’t require spending ages in the gym. All you need to do is overcome these three common obstacles so nothing stands in your way from building the leaner, stronger and fitter body you want!

1 No Plan!
The problem: Not all cliches are true but the saying “if you fail to prepare, then prepare to fail” couldn’t be more accurate when wanting to strip away body fat. To lose weight quickly you need a training plan, because without one the road to a leaner and fitter body is long, winding and full of obstacles.

2 No Purpose!
The problem: Once you have a training programme you need to work out with purpose, because no matter how good your plan is on paper, it’s how you bring it to life that counts. Training without sufficient intensity is, after lacking a plan, the biggest barrier to fat loss that I see in gyms, and I’d bet that at least 95% of men in commercial gyms are failing to train with enough desire to change their bodies for the better.
The fix: From now on I want you to treat your sessions like sport. Why? Because it’s the only way to train with the 3Ps – passion, purpose and pride – and that’s what’s going to give you the results you want in the fastest-possible time. When you played football or tennis, either as a kid or an adult, I’d wager you wanted to win. You never just went through the motions, lacking drive and determination, but played hard and left everything you had on the pitch or court. If not, your every pass would’ve been intercepted and every serve would’ve found the net. Adopt that same “finish first” mindset you have for sport for your sessions and I guarantee you’ll start stripping away fat faster than ever.

3 No Tension!
The problem: In most aspects of life the key to happiness is minimising tension, especially at work and in relationships, but in the gym your ability to apply the maximum amount of tension to your muscles is the difference-maker between incredible gains or remaining the same. Once you know how to maximise muscular tension you’re on the fast-track to rapid fat loss and new lean muscle mass.
The fix: Each rep should be treated the same as a golfer treats a tee shot: they move with perfect form and through a full range of motion to land their ball smack bang on the fairway. If you fail to do either then you’re heading for the rough. What’s more, executing the correct movement pattern keeps all of the workload on the muscle, rather than the joints, tendons and other connective tissues (where too much tension causes injury), and going through a full range taps into more muscles fibres to make every rep more effective in building new muscle. Before starting a set take a few seconds to visualise the lift’s movement pattern, or even do a few reps without any weights, to “grease the groove” and better prepare your mind and muscles for delivering those body-changing perfect reps.
