Are you waiting for the perfect time to start?

Here’s New Body Plan co-founder Joe Warner on why we should all set an Autumn Resolution, because waiting for the New Year is a big waste of time

As I write this there is exactly one month until Christmas. But Joe, I hear you cry, that’s ages away! I don’t want to think about that yet! And you’re right – me neither and I’m sorry, but bear with me.

I’ve mentioned Christmas for good reason. It’s because I’m already sick to the back teeth of hearing from friends and family that they’d love to lose a bit of weight and get into better shape, but there’s “no point” starting now. It “makes more sense” to wait until the New Year, they tell me, and with a perfectly straight face to add insult to injury.

Now, I find their logic completely bonkers – and that’s what I’ve said to everyone who has bought into the “it’s best to wait until January” b*llsh*t. And it’s why I am telling all of my mates, as well as encouraging you right now, to set yourself an Autumn Resolution.

Why? Because you can make a huge difference to the way you look and feel in just eight weeks. It’s true, because I’ve witnessed it first hand: that’s how long it took my colleague Jon Lipsey to go from clinically overweight to Men’s Fitness cover model.

The perfect problem
It’s a decent chunk of time in which anyone – yes, I’m looking at you – can make massive changes to their physical and mental health. But this is where time becomes the problem. It seems we humans are programmed to think in specific blocks of time. Days and weeks, months and years, birthdays and bank holidays, Christmas and New Year. Our lives are seemingly governed, planned and remembered around arbitrary days and dates. Here’s an example, and be honest: how many times have you said to yourself, or someone else, that “the diet starts Monday”? We’ve all done it, right?

But waiting for the “perfect time” to act – whether that’s starting a new exercise routine, learning a language or instrument, or applying for your dream job – is the single-biggest reason why so many of us never achieve those genuinely-attainable ambitions that would have a life-changing impact on our health, happiness and well-being.

Seize the day!
The truth is that the best time to start working towards your goal was yesterday, because you’d have already taken that first step, which is always the hardest. So that means the next best time is NOW! Today! Don’t worry, your first move doesn’t have to be big or dramatic. It can be as simple and easy as signing up to a new training programme.

You’d like to exercise at home but don’t have any equipment? No problem, we’ve got the plan for you. You’ve a set of dusty dumbbells in the garage that you could use? Great, take a look at this.

Or maybe you want our most popular body-transformation package that has already helped thousands of lose fat, build muscle and roll back the years to look, feel and perform better than ever? You got it!

Weekday warrior
Just think, if you sign up today you can begin your plan tomorrow (and yes, it is possible to begin an exercise plan in the middle of the week – it doesn’t have to start on a Monday, I’ve checked) then in just eight weeks you’ll look and feel incredible.

You’ll be in the shape of your life right in time for your work’s Christmas party – where colleagues from other departments will greet you like a new-starter – while also giving your partner time to buy your annual gift of a vest-and-underpants set in a size you’ve not worn for years.

You see, the sooner you start the easier it is. And while how much progress you’ll make before Christmas is ultimately up to you, the one thing I do know is that if you keep waiting for the perfect time to start then you’re going to be waiting forever.
